In her autobiography, Agatha Christie briefly mentions the small London apartment where she lived after World War I with her husband Archibald, at 5 Northwick Terrace, west of Regent’s Park. The building has since been destroyed. She remembers, “There was a microscopic kitchenette and bathroom, and I planned to do a certain amount of cooking.”

Scotswood, Sunningdale

Throughout her life, the queen of the mystery novel lived in many different places. In 1924, the Christies moved from London to Sunningdale, Berkshire. “They first rent one of the two apartments on the upper floors of a large Victorian house called Scotswood.” Precisely the one on the second floor where they lived for about two years.

Further on in her autobiography, the novelist talks about the time she spent in Scotswood. She talks of course about her first car, a Morris Cowley, purchased shortly after the Christie family arrived in Sunningdale. She recounts “The worst moment was when I had to turn into Scotswood and get myself in to an extremely narrow garage, next to our neighbour ’s car. These people lived in the flat below us–a young couple called the Rawncliffes. The wife reported to her husband: ‘I saw the first floor driving back this morning. I don ’t think she has ever driven a car before. She drove into that garage absolutely shaking and as white as a sheet. I thought she was going to ram the wall , but she just didn’t !’ ”

Later, after buying Styles, located a little further, Agatha and Archie had to move, still in Sunningdale.
The big house on Devenish Road has been converted into several flats and sometimes one of them is for sale, as you can see on this advertisement where a garage can be seen.
